Engaging Ideas Professor Bean provides the theory behind his
recommendations but, as any teacher who has delved into this literature
knows, theories about effective teaching aren't in themselves necessarily
very helpful. What one needs is practical advice, and this book has
it---lots of it. Bean identifies different writing activities for students;
shows how to design tasks for active thinking and learning in the classroom;
suggests effective ways to make use of small group discussion in the
classroom; explains ways to increase active learning in a lecture course;
discusses the mechanics of grading papers; and shows how to enhance learning
in essay exams. Even for the experienced teacher, there's a good deal of
worthwhile material here, and it's cogently presented. A highly recommended
book for the professor who wants to increase active learning in the
classroom and get more out of a lecture course |

Guide to e-Learning
|
As an international speaker and consultant to virtually every business
sector over his more than thirty-five years of research and development
in technology-based instruction, Michael Allen now speaks out about his
frustrations with e-learning and brings fundamental issues to light. He
shares specific, commonsense guidelines that reliably produce effective
and practical learning solutions. From his pioneering work on learning
management systems, to authoring systems, and now on instructional
design, experts and buyers alike follow his leadership and respect his
opinion:
"Every subject area has its bible. This is it for e-learning. This is
the how-to book for both instructional designers and executives
responsible for corporate e-learning programs. Especially well done and
unique to this book are the chapters on learner motivation and how
effective instructional interactivities are created. The bottom line,
from our experience working with Michael Allen and his team, is the
methods and principles defined in this book workand work well."
"Michael Allen has done it all. He has designed and developed huge
amounts of effective e-learning. He has built several very successful
businesses providing programs to sophisticated clients. He has managed
development. He personally led the creation of Authorware, the benchmark
authoring system used throughout the world. He has lectured. He has
written. He has taught. His opinions and perspective are sought by many.
But mostly, he thinks. And the results of that thinking are to the
benefit of us all. I am glad he wrote down what he thinks." |

What smart students know
Like the other reviewers, I was and am super-impressed with the
learning techniques Robinson advocates. A few of the reviewers,
however, object that to use all of the techniques requires too
much time or effort.
These reviewers miss Robinson's primary point: that
traditional "learning" methods are boring, time-consuming, AND
ineffective. Think of the methods as a football quarter-back's
"playbook:" you don't have to run EVERY play in the book in
EVERY game. Robinson himself says that the methods do not apply
in every course, and that some methods apply more in some types
of courses than others. Robinson does NOT tell students to
employ ALL the methods ALL the time.
Another point I'd like to make is that any new set of
learning techniques takes time. Heck, typing took me forever to
master; but now that I've invested the time it saves me WAY more
than the time I spent learning it.
Finally, Robinson's point is that HOWEVER MUCH time you have
to devote to your studies, whether it's an hour a day per
college course or an hour per week for a high school course --
whatever -- your time is best employed using these methods. If
you're short of time, or the test isn't so important, Robinson
says to cut back on the methods to fit your time budget and the
importance of the test.
The more time you have, and the more important the test, the
more you should use Robinson's methods. The less time you have,
simply cut back. No biggie.
Either that, or go back to wasting all your time with the old
"learning" methods of rereading your notes ad infinitum until
test time. |

Writers Inc. It's meant for high scholars, but adults who haven't
inhaled chalk dust for years might appreciate it even more. The process of
organizing, researching and writing a paper is laid is out in
easy-to-understand normal-speak. The chapters on grammar and usage are very
user-friendly, and lots of extras (suffixes, parliamentary procedure,
periodic table, metric system, the U.S. Constitution, world maps, etc.) make
this an extraordinarily popular and useful household item. If you're feeling
generous, you might even let the kid take it to school on occasion |

Study Power For students to succeed, intelligence and motivation
are not enough; students also need to understand and become aware of what
they do while studying and how they can improve their study skills. This
manual helps them understand the elements of study skills, presented under
three task groupings: input (learning what to do to learn materials more
effectively); processing their learning so it becomes part of his
understanding; and output tasks so they can produce evidence of their
knowledge and understanding on tests, and in papers and oral presentations.
Key skills covered include: listening note taking concentration
summarizing reading comprehension memorization test taking preparing
papers and reports time management and more! These abilities are vital
to success throughout every stage of learning; the benefits will last a
lifetime. These skills have been taught successfully to students from fifth
grade through medical school |

Kolb's "Experiential Learning" is a masterpiece. In it, he deftly
synthesizes the strands of learning theory and psychological research that
inform his 4 stage learning cycle. All committed "experiential educators"
should consult this book in order more deeply to understand the deep and
rich conceptual foundation(s) of our potent pedagogical practice. In his
"Foreword" to the volume, Leadership guru Warren Bennis positively
hyperventilates in applauding Kolb's achievement in this work. And for good
reason! From thence comes Kolb's elegant & powerful "Learning Styles
Inventory" (or LSI), among other things. Even if you're a cynic or skeptic
re: the merit of experiential education, you would do well to peruse this
tour-de-force in order better to appreciate what you may be missing |

The Ph.D. Process offers the essential guidance that students in
the biological and physical sciences need to get the most out of their
years in graduate school. Drawing upon the insights of numerous current
and former graduate students, this book presents a rich portrayal of the
intellectual and emotional challenges inherent in becoming a scientist,
and offers the informed, practical advice a "best friend" would give
about each stage of the graduate school experience. What are the best
strategies for applying to a graduate program? How are classes
conducted? How should I choose an advisor and a research project? What
steps can I take now to make myself more "employable" when I get my
degree? What goes on at the oral defense? Through a balanced, thorough
examination of issues ranging from lab etiquette to stress management,
the authors--each a Ph.D. in the sciences--provide the vital information
that will allow students to make informed decisions all along the way to
the degree. Headlined sections within each chapter make it fast and easy
to look up any subject, while dozens of quotes describing personal
experiences in graduate programs from people in diverse scientific
fields contribute invaluable real-life expertise. Special attention is
also given to the needs of international students.
Read in advance, this book prepares students for each step of the
graduate school experience that awaits them. Read during the course of a
graduate education, it serves as a handy reference covering virtually
all major issues and decisions a doctoral candidate is likely to face.
The Ph.D. Process is the one book every graduate student in the
biological and physical sciences can use to stay a step ahead, from
application all the way through graduation |
